Jolteon Hoodie

The Jolteon hoodie was a gift for an enthusiasitic Pokemon fan, Jolteon being his favorite. I took reference photos of my dog to get the pose of the body and used many reference photos to ensure the snarl looks as menacing as possible.

My Process

Design Details

I made sure to create an original design that captures Jolteon's electric and strong energy. I illustrated with a style that had sharp corners and hard edges to match Jolteon's electric powers. The front left chest design is made of the same lightning bolts that are on the back illustration and keep the front looking minimal.

Because this design is created to be printed, I ensured the DPI was set to 300 for crisp edges, the color profile set to CMYK for accurate colors, and the final delivered image had plenty of margin so printing and placing can be done smoothly.

Colors

The colors lean towards the warm side due to Jolteon's yellow fur. The lighning bolts are bright pink to continue the bright and striking appearance of the illustration. Light blue highlights on Jolteon's body highly contrast the fur and create the effect of the lightning casting highlights.

Conclusion

I started this illustration with a concept sketch to make sure the idea and composition looked how I wanted. Having the sketch underneath gave me the space to experiment with the illustration style and colors without having to think about the composition. The most rewarding part of this prject is seeing my design printed on the hoodie and worn in the real world. This project also reminded me of my love for drawing and I'd love to use that skill to make more designs.
